What is MTAC?

The Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) is a professional organization dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in music education. With over 4,700 members, there are more than 60 affiliated Branches throughout the state. With unique educational programs and dynamic local branches, MTAC continues to promote the ideals that guided the founders over 100 years ago. Their vision is fulfilled every day in the lives of the students, teachers, staff and volunteers who help run MTAC

Why is my teacher’s MTAC membership important?

An MTAC membership signifies that your teacher is committed to maintain high standards for providing a musical education to your student. In order to qualify for membership, teachers must undergo a rigorous certification process and meet strict educational and work experience standards. Your teacher’s MTAC membership is your assurance that their educational background and teaching experience has been verified by an independent, state-wide professional organization, providing the best learning opportunity for your student.

Our membership requirements include:

• A Bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited college, university or conservatory (or the equivalent)

• Degrees obtained outside the U.S. require an equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree in music, documented with a special Foreign Credential Evaluation Report

• A degree emphasis or four years of individual study at a college level in the desired Primary Instrument or Subject

• Minimum of two years teaching experience in the Primary Instrument or Subject

• Compliance with MTAC Bylaws
